Since December 2024, 35 people in six federal states (Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Styria, Tyrol, Vienna) in Austria have fallen ill with a certain strain of salmonella. 10 people had to be hospitalised. The Ministry of Health has commissioned AGES to investigate this food-borne outbreak.
Based on the positive test results from food and veterinary samples from poultry farms, the current hypothesis is that the source of infection may be found in eggs, egg products or chicken meat. Especially in the warm season, kitchen hygiene plays an important role in the preparation of animal foods in order to avoid infections.
This food-borne outbreak is being investigated in close co-operation between AGES, the Ministry of Health and the relevant provincial authorities.
