Food control: poppy seeds

| 1 min read
Human Plant

Poppy seeds naturally contain small amounts of opium alkaloids such as morphine and codeine, which can have a narcotic effect. Maximum levels of morphine and codeine are therefore specified in foodstuffs, e.g. cake filling, poppy seed rolls or oil. None of the 42 foodstuffs examined had to be objected to by us.

We also examined the levels of cadmium in these foods. Cadmium is a heavy metal that is absorbed by plants through the soil. New maximum levels were set for cadmium in the previous year, and 40 foodstuffs already complied with them. Two foods had a cadmium content that is no longer permitted as of the end of February due to this change in the maximum levels.
