EFSA confirms that the sweetener sucralose (E 955) is safe for authorised uses as a food additive.

Sucralose is a sweetener whose sweetening power is around 600 times stronger than that of sugar. As an additive, sucralose with the E number E-955 is only authorised in certain foods.

The experts at the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) concluded that sucralose (E 955) continues to be safe for consumers in the currently authorised uses as a food additive. The acceptable daily intake (ADI) of 15 mg/kg body weight per day remains unchanged. The acceptable daily intake is the amount of a substance that a person can consume daily for a lifetime without jeopardising their health.

In Austria, the intake of sucralose through food is between 0.2-0.6 mg/kg body weight per day. The ADI is only utilised up to 4 %.

The EFSA was unable to confirm the safety of sucralose for other uses: Prolonged exposure of E 955 to high temperatures may cause chlorine to leach from sucralose and possibly form chlorinated compounds, the health effects of which are unknown. Therefore: Avoid baking with protein powders sweetened with sucralose in any case.
