The aim of the focus campaign was to obtain as much accurate data as possible for a reference database in order to be able to draw conclusions about apples offered on the Austrian market and in schools in the future. In order to be able to verify the origin and authenticity of apples, especially school fruit apples in Austria, authentic reference samples (from the farmer, directly from the field) and corresponding market samples from Austria were taken.

43 samples (28 reference samples and 15 market samples) from all over Austria were analysed, whereby the collected data served the purpose of establishing a reference database and were not subjected to a food law assessment. Based on the reference samples taken, corresponding market samples (with the same producer and identical apple variety) were taken from retailers. No market sample was objected to.
