The aim of the priority action was to test the safety and food law compliance of these products, which naturally contain hydrocyanic acid or hydrocyanic acid glycosides. The measured levels are to be recorded and analysed as part of an EU-wide monitoring process.
265 samples from all over Austria were analysed, of which 26 linseed samples were tested for hydrocyanic acid. Four linseed samples were rejected:
- One linseed sample exceeded the maximum level for hydrogen cyanide of 250 mg/kg
- Three linseed samples were rejected due to the lack of the warning "Use only for cooking and baking. Do not consume raw!".
All grated and ground almonds tested for hydrocyanic acid complied with the legal requirements. The levels of hydrocyanic acid in tinned stone fruit, alcoholic drinks, Turkish honey, nougat and marzipan also complied with the requirements. Only small amounts of hydrocyanic acid were found in vegan milk surrogates.
