Mosquito monitoring at Vienna International Airport Annual Report 2023

Since 2018, mosquito monitoring has been carried out at Vienna International Airport in order to determine whether exotic and potentially invasive mosquito species are being introduced to Austria via air transport.

Particular attention is being paid to the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), which has already spread massively in Europe in recent years. These mosquito species are potential vectors of a large number of pathogens and therefore pose a risk to public health. The aim of this project is to recognise the occurrence of these species at the airport at an early stage, enabling countermeasures to be taken in good time. Furthermore, the data obtained can be used to record the spatial and temporal changes in the occurrence of alien mosquito species throughout Austria.
