From the Alps to the Mediterranean: One Health surveillance and vector monitoring for cross-border pathogens
Why take part?
Vector-borne diseases, spread by mosquitoes and ticks, cause over 700,000 deaths annually but can be prevented through control measures. Knowledge about the presence and distribution of vectors is key to informing policy interventions. The OH SURVector project aims to establish nationwide surveillance systems to monitor vectors and pathogens, address data gaps and collaborate towards One Health surveillance.
Over the past three years, project partners from five European countries have worked on the following objectives and surveillance activities.
- Early detection of new tick and mosquito species capable of transmitting zoonotic pathogens
- Early detection of newly introduced pathogens transmitted by ticks and mosquitoes
- Early detection of changes in the distribution of vectors and pathogens
Networking amongst all stakeholder groups is a key tool for achieving these objectives, and the OH SURVector Symposium not only serves to communicate the project’s main outcomes but also provides the ideal platform for fostering international networking at both expert and policy levels.
Target group
- Experts (vectors, vector-borne diseases) from the five consortium countries
- Policy representatives from public health and animal health sectors within national competent authorities, federal states and also from the consortium member states
- International representatives from EFSA, ECDC, HaDEA, the European Commission, and representatives of sister projects within the OH Surveillance Grant
- Specialist audiences and colleagues from universities, museums, public health authorities, vector specialists and VBD researchers
