Since August 2025, more than 40 people in eight federal states (Burgenland, Carinthia, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Styria, Vorarlberg, Vienna) in Austria have fallen ill with a rare strain of salmonella.14 people had to be treated in hospital. The Ministry of Health has commissioned AGES to investigate this food-borne outbreak.
Salmonella Kenya is rare throughout Europe. However, several other European countries have now also registered cases of illness with this strain of salmonella. So far there is no indication of the source of this outbreak.
This food-borne outbreak is being investigated in close co-operation between AGES, the Ministry of Health and the relevant provincial authorities.
