AGES has issued a warning, on behalf of the Ministry of Health, regarding safety issues with the ‘Squishy Dumplings’ toy.

AGES has so far tested 23 of these dumplings; all 23 samples were found to be unsuitable for children due to their composition.

Some of the dumplings contained chemicals that pose a health risk, such as toluene, styrene, ethylbenzene, benzene and xylene, which should not be present in toys due to potential health risks. Many samples lacked the required labelling details, such as the CE mark and information about the manufacturer or importer.

What are ‘squishy dumplings’?

Dumplings and similar products are toys and anti-stress items designed for squeezing, kneading and playing with. The outer casing of the dumplings often contains liquid or gel-like fillings such as water beads, gels or sand. However, the interior of the dumplings may also consist of solid materials such as soft, elastic thermoplastic rubber or PU foam. It is often not possible to tell from the information on the packaging what material the fillings are made of.

Tips

  • Even if you’ve seen it on social media: squishy products should never be heated, especially not in the microwave. If the dumpling bursts, the hot water or hot gel can cause serious burns to your child
  • Check for damaged casings
  • Do not give young children any toys that, according to the warning label, are not suitable for children under three years of age
  • When it comes to toys in general, check whether the packaging shows the address of a responsible manufacturer or importer in the EU
