The message is aimed at anyone who takes over-the-counter medicines – such as painkillers, nasal sprays, antacids or cough syrup – either frequently or just occasionally: “Read the package leaflet, follow the instructions and always use over-the-counter medicines responsibly”. The aim is to raise awareness among patients about the correct use of over-the-counter medicines. 

In Austria, there are almost 5,000 medicines that can be bought without a prescription. These medicines are proven to be effective, but they can also have side effects. That is why it is important to read the package leaflet carefully before taking them. Only if you are fully familiar with the instructions for use can the medicine work properly and be used with the greatest possible safety.
