Marketability of special oils

Final Report of Priority Action A-013-17

The objective of the focus action "Marketability of Specialty Oils" was to examine the specialty oils available on the domestic market with regard to labeling, organoleptics (odor, taste, appearance), composition, residues and contaminants. 90 samples were examined, 37 samples (41.1%) were objected:

  • The majority of complaints were related to labeling deficiencies or misleading claims.
  • Six samples were unsuitable for human consumption/intended use
  • Three samples were rejected due to excessive levels of trans fatty acids

In Austria, there are many small manufacturers producing special products such as flaxseed, hazelnut, walnut, peanut, soybean, safflower, hemp, poppy seed, grape seed or wheat germ oil. These specialty oils are often produced in small quantities and are often marketed only in the local market. They are mostly not detected during routine sampling. A focus campaign in 2013 showed high complaint rates of 64% overall. In a repetition in 2015, the complaint rate was 45.6%.
