The objective of the focal action was to collect data regarding compliance with food regulations for drinking water at individual suppliers and small water supply plants (WVA) (≤ 10 m³/d).

195 samples from all over Austria were examined. 27 samples were objected to:

• 26 samples were judged unsafe - unsuitable for human consumption - mainly because of bacteriological contamination (coliform bacteria, Escherichia coli, enterococci, total bacterial counts), but also because of exceedances of the parameter values for nitrate and nitrite.
• one sample was assessed as not in compliance with the Drinking Water Ordinance No. 304/2001 due to the isolated detection of Escherichia coli.
