The aim of the focus action "Soap bubbles and finger paints" was to check whether the safety requirements of the Toy Ordinance 2011 regarding the use and concentration of certain preservatives, microbiological contamination and certain chemical properties are met. For this purpose, the responsible food inspectorate took samples from retailers. 37 samples from all over Austria were examined. 22 samples were objected to:

• The predominant reason for complaint was insufficient/missing EC declarations of conformity or labeling deficiencies.
• Four samples were rejected due to hygiene deficiencies.

Detailed requirements for the safety of toys are contained in the European standard EN 71. In the present action, microbiological contamination was also checked. To prevent contamination with germs, certain preservatives may be used. Limits for certain preservatives apply as of 24.11.2017; eight samples were above these future values, which were not yet valid at the time the samples were taken.
