Iodine in algae

Final report of the priority action A-042-20

The aim of the focus action was to review the content of iodine in algae in accordance with a recommendation from the European Commission in 2018. The data serve as the basis for a risk assessment, as well as for setting future maximum levels. No maximum levels are currently set for iodine. The labeling was also reviewed with regard to the information on safe preparation, as well as the information on quantitative use in connection with an increased iodine content. 42 samples from all over Austria were examined. Five samples were objected to:

  • three samples were judged to be harmful to health due to the high iodine content
  • two samples were not correctly labeled
