The aim of the focal action was to survey the current prevalence of hepatitis E viruses in raw pork liver from Austrian retail outlets.

Seventy-eight samples from all over Austria were examined.

Hepatitis E viruses were detected in three samples (3.8%)

Although viral RNA was detected in three samples, the risk for consumers to become infected with hepatitis E from pork liver of Austrian production remains low.
