HERA2-Workshop: "Bioinformatic Masterminds"
On 27 and 28 May 2025, a workshop on the exchange of existing bioinformatics structures in national agencies of European countries took place at AGES in Vienna. The Workshop was organized and funded within the framework of the HERA2 research project. As masterminds, speakers from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), the Public Health Agency of Sweden, the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), the Danish Statens Serum Institute (SSI), and the Norwegian Veterinary Institute (NVI) were invited.
Additional international participants from Croatia, Hungary, Greece, Portugal, Germany, the Netherlands, and Norway also attended. In addition to presenting AGES’ internal pipelines and infrastructures, the workshop provided valuable networking opportunities, which were actively used by participants. Furthermore, the exchange of experiences generated many important insights.
In the final discussion session, participants discussed several key topics in small groups: bioinformatics pipelines, the use of existing sequencing data, the definition of bioinformatics tasks, tech stacks, and bioinformatics in the One Health context. These discussions revealed further commonalities, as well as some surprising differences.
