The European Rapid Alert System for Food (RASFF) reported that contamination with Bacillus cereus was detected in the Netherlands during self-checks by manufacturers of infant formula. The affected batches were delivered to several EU Member States, but not to Austria.
These batches have already been recalled in close co-operation with the respective national authorities.
Bacillus cereus bacteria can form spores that are particularly resistant to heating. They can form the toxin cereulide, which is extremely resistant to heat and acid and can already be pre-formed in food. Cereulide can lead to nausea and severe vomiting, especially in premature babies and infants.
