According to current estimates, over one million tonnes of food is thrown away every year in Austria alone, around 521,000 tonnes of which is thrown away in private households. A large proportion of this could be avoided.
"At AGES, we are committed to scientifically sound and sustainable nutrition in Austria," emphasises AGES Managing Director Priv.-Doz. Dr Johannes Pleiner-Duxneuner. "With the #Safe2Eat campaign, together with the Ministry of Health, we are actively helping to raise awareness of the safe handling of food. We have also updated the Austrian nutritional recommendations to provide consumers with guidance for a balanced and environmentally conscious diet that is suitable for everyday use. In this way, we are strengthening the population's nutritional competence from purchasing to utilisation."
Health Minister Korinna Schumann emphasises: "Food is precious, both in everyday life and for our health. Anyone who knows the difference between "best before" and "use by", stores it correctly and utilises it creatively can not only reduce waste, but also make an active contribution to health and social responsibility. With the #Safe2Eat initiative, we want to raise awareness of the responsible handling of food. Informed decisions help to ensure quality, conserve resources and avoid waste."
The climate also benefits from a varied diet and less food waste: Those who opt for seasonal and regional ingredients can reduce their own CO₂ footprint by up to 30 per cent. At the same time, this variety opens up the opportunity to eat more varied and healthier food. Vegetables in particular offer a rich palette of flavours, colours and preparation options and help to make meals sustainable and enjoyable.
