Mycotoxins in spices

Final report of the priority action A-039-17

The aim of the focus action "Mycotoxins in spices" was to obtain an overview of the current contamination of spices with aflatoxins and ochratoxin A. 50 different spice samples (bell pepper, paprika/chili, spice mixtures, curry powder, turmeric, nutmeg, ginger, cumin, spice preparation, coriander) from all over Austria were examined. One sample of nutmeg exceeded the maximum level for ochratoxin A and was rejected. In two samples, the labeling did not comply with the provisions of the Food Information Regulation. Aflatoxins and ochratoxin A are mold toxins (mycotoxins). The molds occur frequently in nature - in the soil, in rotting vegetation, in hay and grain - and can infect plant products and food.
