Since the end of February 2023, 14 clinical botulism cases have been reported in Europe that appear to have been caused by medical exposure resulting from injection of botulism neurotoxin into the stomach.

Cases were reported in Germany (12), Austria (1), and Switzerland (1). The treatments were performed between February 22 and 25, 2023, in Turkey (Istanbul). In 10 individuals, the treatment is known to have been performed in the same clinic. Individuals who receive such gastric treatment with Botox in Istanbul and experience symptoms are urged to seek medical attention. Typical symptoms include visual and speech disturbances and weakness in the extremities, difficulty swallowing and breathing, which usually occur between three to ten days after treatment.
