The purpose of this focal action was to check whether the legal limits for d-camphor and thujone in spirits, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are complied with. Twenty-three samples from all over Austria were examined; no sample had to be objected to. Thujone is found as a component of essential oils of herbs such as wormwood, thyme, sage in herb-based beverages. The flavoring agent d-camphor is approved as a flavoring agent for beverages and is a characteristic ingredient of herbal liqueurs (e.g. Schwedenbitter).
