Mare's, donkey's and buffalo's milk and products thereof - microbiology and adulteration

Final Report of Priority Action A-005-17

The aim of the focus action was to check products in these product groups for hygiene aspects and whether the milk used came from the specified animal species.

25 samples from all over Austria were examined. Ten samples were rejected:

  • two samples showed prohibited nutrition and health claims
  • two samples were objected to because of inadmissible disease-related claims
  • nine of the ten samples were also objected to for labeling deficiencies

Foods made from mare's, camel's, buffalo's or goat's milk are usually offered at high prices and often advertised with inadmissible misleading and disease-related claims. Milk and dairy products as well as food supplements were inspected.
