The aim of the focus action was to determine the extent to which lip care products are contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Fifty-four samples from all over Austria were examined. Seven samples were rejected due to labeling deficiencies. PAHs are carcinogenic substances, and some PAHs are banned in cosmetic products. Small amounts resulting from impurities of natural or synthetic ingredients, the manufacturing process, storage or migration from packaging, which cannot be technically avoided, are allowed if the cosmetic product is safe for human health. Lip care products represent the most contaminated product category.
