Final report of the priority action A-048-18

The aim of the focus action was to verify compliance with the amended legal requirements for this product group.

97 samples from all over Austria were examined. 27 samples were rejected:

  • In one sample, the zinc content was so high that the tolerable intake limit was significantly exceeded
  • 26 samples were rejected due to labeling deficiencies.

In the past, foods for athletes were subject to the special regulations for "dietetic foods" from a food law perspective. With the entry into force of Regulation (EU) No. 609/2013, "sports foods" are now considered "foods (for general consumption)"; i.e. they are subject to the strict legal requirements regarding health claims. Similar to food supplements, this food category is consumed primarily for its (supposed) physiological effects rather than for enjoyment.
