The Reference Center for Technical Quality Assurance (RefZQS) within the Radiation Protection Division carries out quality assurance measures in line with EUREF Ö guidelines as part of the Breast Cancer Early Detection Programme (BKFP).  In doing so, the RefCQA ensures that the high quality standards for X-ray and periphery machines, as well as ultrasound devices used by the participating radiologists, are maintained as prescribed in the European Guidelines for Quality Assurance in Breast Cancer Screening and Diagnosis".

Reference Centre Core Tasks

One of the RefCQS’s main tasks is to enable Austria-wide comparability of measuring equipment data and optimise image quality to ensure improved identification of breast cancer. Thus, mammography equipment, diagnostic viewing systems, ultrasound devices and laser imaging films are checked on a regular basis. Furthermore, knowledge and practical technical quality assurance in line with EUREF guidelines for radiologists and group practices that want to take part in the breast cancer screening programme are one key element in achieving the programme’s goal.

Not only does the reference centre coordinate the tests it conducts for the individuals trained for taking measurements according to EUREF-Ö, but also contributes to scientific work in the field of mammography. This guarantees that the RefCQA has all the competence required to carry out its quality assurance and consulting activities for the examination units at the appropriate technical standard and consider new technologies in the Breast Cancer Screening Programme.

Breast Cancer Screening Programme

The background to the quality assurance measures is a quality-assured, nation-wide, population-related Breast Cancer Screening Programme that was introduced on 01.01.2014. The goal is to reduce the breast cancer mortality rate and ensure better chances of recovery and gentler therapy methods for women in Austria.
