Nutrition Action Plan (NAP.e)

Changed on: 09.02.2017

The Nutrition Action Plan (NAP.e) has been designed to bundle nutrition policy measures across Austria for the first time. It defines targets and documents as many measures as possible that will be taken to achieve the goals desired. Reductions in levels of poor nutrition, overeating and malnutrition, as well as a trend reversal in the number of overweight and obese people by 2020, are high priorities. Consistent measures will be undertaken and structures will be adapted and/or created to pave the way for better, ideally optimal, dietary behaviour. The healthier choice should also become the easier choice for all Austrians.

It will be important to get as many initiatives and activities started, bundled and coordinated, so that healthier choices will become the easier choices for everyone living in Austria. AGES is conducting the programme for early nutrition "Richtig essen von Anfang an!" and the initiative for school nutrition and cafeterias "Unser Schulbuffet", as part of the Austrian Nutrition Action Plan.

Targets

Targets

Structures enabling better dietary and health awareness are vital, in addition to promoting healthier dietary behaviour. As a result, the Austrian Nutrition Action Plan focuses on four comprehensive action areas in which the following measures are necessary:

  • Strengthening the field of nutrition in the health and public sectors
  • Implementing integrated measures to promote health and prevent nutrition and lifestyle-associated diseases
  • Expanding the database for evidence-based procedures and quality control
  • Promoting networks at local, regional, national and international levels

NAP.e and nutrition-related prevention have complementary missions: prolonging the number of healthy years in people’s lifetimes as a contribution to improving the overall quality of life. The focus of the primary nutrition targets will be on nutrients:

  • Adapted energy supply through sufficient consumption of vitamins and minerals while avoiding excess supply
  • Reduction of fat consumption
  • Reduction of trans-fatty acids
  • Reduction of saturated fatty acids
  • Optimising fat quality
  • Reduction of added sugar
  • Reduction of salt intake
  • Increased ingestion of complex carbohydrates
  • Increased ingestion of dietary fibre
  • Optimising liquid consumption

Committee for Nutrition

Committee for Nutrition

The Austrian Committee for Nutrition (NEK), which serves as an advisory body to the Minister of Health in regards to all dietary issues, was established as an accompanying measure.  The NEK consists of relevant organisations and institutions, as well as nutrition experts. This ensures a balanced opinion forming process at an interdisciplinary level from the beginning and, subsequently, a coordinated nutrition policy.

Working Groups

Working Groups

Various working groups and task forces that can include additional experts focused on specific issues on a temporary basis were established to work in special areas.
