The project "Future Bee" (Zukunft Biene) focuses on researching bee health in Austria and the effect of agriculture, apiculture and climate conditions on losses of bees and bee colonies. It will run for three years (2014-2017) and has been designed to examine and identify the causes of bee losses, using applied and basic research. The long-term objective is to reduce bee losses in the future and improve the general health situation of Austria’s bee population.
Most project modules involve close cooperation with beekeepers to achieve results relevant to practice and beekeeping. The project is run by Univ. Prof. Dr. Karl Crailsheim (Department of Zoology, University of Graz). The work done by AGES focuses on the modules "Land Use and Winter Losses", "Study on the Causes of Bee and Colony Losses" and "Diversity of Honey Plants" (contact: bienenno@Spam@agesno.Spam.at).
