Shigellosis is found worldwide. The prevalence of the infection varies from country to country, as does the relative proportion of the four Shigella species. S. dysenteriae 1, the pathogen causing epidemic shigellosis, is responsible for extensive outbreaks in Central Africa, South East Asia and India. S. flexneri is found predominantly in tropical and subtropical regions where it accounts for roughly 50 % of shigelloses. S. boydii is mainly found in India. In the industrialised world, S. sonnei is the most important shigellosis pathogen.
