Catalogue of Measures for Child Nutrition (Aged 4 – 10)

Every fifth child between the age of 6 and 9 is overweight or obese. What measures are required?

Austrian children and young people are increasingly overweight and obese. The new catalogue of measures for nutrition for children aged 4 to 10 summarizes three fields of activity, including their effective model projects and success factors, designed to help reverse this trend.
The catalogue of measures describes the following approaches as very promising for future projects aimed at 4- to 10-year-old children:

  1. Nutritional Knowledge and Dietary Habits
Include parents, carers and teachers; provide information in a number of languages and via different media; more integration of nutrition and diet as a topic in school curricula; practical use of information learned (cooking together, planting vegetables)
  2. Catering Institutions and Restaurants
Define standards for healthy school and nursery dinners; optimise “Child Menu” offers in Restaurants
  3. Children’s Food
Label product information for children’s foods transparently; cooperation with food manufacturers to reduce the amount of fat, sugar and salt in products for children.
The catalogue of measures introduces national and international model projects for the nutrition for children in the 4- to 10-year-old age group and assists in the planning and conducting of regional activites.
The catalogue was developed as part of the health promotion programme “Richtig essen von Anfang an!” (Eat Right from the Start!) in cooperation with the Fonds Gesundes Österreich (FGÖ). This catalogue of measures is available at

“Richtig essen von Anfang an!” (Eat Right from the Start!) was initiated by the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety GmbH (AGES), the Federal Ministry for Health and Women’s Affairs (BMFG) and the Main Association of the Austrian Social Security Funds (HVB).
