IAG – International Analytical Group, Section Feed Analysis

The IAG proficiency test is an international laboratory performance test which is conducted once a year. The ring test includes the following samples: a forage - mostly alfalfa pellets or grass meal pellets (sample S1) and a compound feed - commercial product (sample S2), which are then both analyzed for ingredients, additives and some undesirable substances.

• forage, unground - mostly alfalfa pellets or grass meal pellets (sample S1, 700 g),
• compound feed, unground - commercial complete or complementary feed (sample S2, 700 g),
• compound feed, ground – commercial feed for special parameters (e.g. z.B. Hg, Cr, Ni, antioxidants, organic acids, …), partially at spiked level (sample S3, 300 g),
• mineral feed, unground – commercial product (sample S4, 400 g),

Additionally, this year ground samples (sealed airtight in screw-top jars - appr. 40 g) of sample 1 and 2 are submitted for the determination of moisture in order to provide a statistical evaluation for this Parameter.

The aim of the IAG ring test is to offer the laboratories the following possibilities:

• to determine the accuracy of their results,
• to verify the technical expertise of their staff,
• to assess the functioning capability of their laboratory equipment
• to fullfill the requirments of accreditation bodies to participate in proficiency tests.

The organization of the proficiency test is based on EN ISO 17043.

Participation fee:

€80 per sample (excluding VAT) plus postage costs (for Europe € 25, for Asia € 50, for the USA € 50, and for Australia and New Zealand € 70. Other countries on request.)
Additional material for internal quality assurance can be purchased (€ 50 per sample excl. postage costs), as long as stocks last.
After payment of the fee, samples are distributed in May.

Scope of analysis / methods

Together with the samples, a list of the parameters to be analysed is sent (ingredients, minerals and trace elements, heavy metals, amino acids and, depending on the feed, additives such as vitamins, enzymes, MHA, coccidiostats, antioxidants. However, not all parameters need to be analyzed on an obligatory basis. The methods of analysis are freely selectable, but should be specified to improve the interpretability of the results (specification of international standards or code). Results obtained by NIRS are evaluated separately.

The results are to be expressed as a mean of such a number of replicates, the laboratory normally uses in feed analysis, corrected for dry matter.

Every participant receives a cover letter with all relevant informations and instructions.

Statistical evaluation

The evaluation is anonymous and includes the calculation of mean value, median, standard deviation, coefficient of variation and the z-score according to ISO 13528 by software R. The report is available electronically. The results are confidential and may not be passed on nor published without the consent of IAG.

Evaluation of results

Each participating laboratory receives a certificate of attendance as well as documentation on their success (number of outliers).

Annual meeting / discussion of results

In the frame of the VDLUFA Congress in the current year (September), or a separate online-meeting, all participating laboratories are invited to a ring test meeting discussion in which, in addition to the discussion of results, the arrangement of the next proficiency test is defined.
