The ALVA proficiency test is an international laboratory performance test that is performed once a year. This inter-laboratory test includes 3 samples, usually a plant sample (e.g. wheat, tobacco, hay, needles) and two feeds (e.g. compound, mineral, complete feed, additives) which are examined for elements as well as ingredients and additives.
The aim of the ALVA proficiency test is to offer the laboratories the following opportunities:
- to determine the accuracy of their results,
- to verify the technical expertise of their staff,
- to assess the functioning capability of their laboratory equipment,
- to test the suitability of methods for different matrices.

Scope of analysis / methods
Together with the samples, a list of the parameters to be analysed is sent (ingredients, minerals and trace elements, heavy metals, amino acids and, depending on the feed, additives such as vitamins, enzymes or antioxidants), although analysis of all parameters is not compulsory. The analysis methods are not mandatory, but should be indicated to improve the interpretability of the results (the method is specified). The results are to be expressed as mean values based on dry matter.
The evaluation is performed in accordance with DIN 38402 and includes the determination of mean value, median, standard deviation, coefficient of variation and additionally the z-score. The report result is transmitted electronically. The results are anonymous and confidential and may not be passed on nor published without the consent of ALVA.
Evaluation of results
Each participating laboratory receives a certificate of attendance as well as documentation on the success (number of outliers).
Annual meeting / discussion of results
In the course of an ALVA meeting during the current year (May or June), all participating laboratories are invited to a ring test meeting discussion in which, in addition to the discussion of results, the orientation of the next test is defined.
