Bacterial and viral diarrhoea diseases rank among the greatest causes of loss amongst suckling pigs and consequently can have the most major economic impact. Diarrhoea illnesses caused by Coronaviruses (PEDV and PDCoV) are currently responsible for mortality rates of 80-100% in North America and Asia; Clostridium difficile has been detected for the first time in Austria as part of a project involving piglets suffering from diarrhoea. Only by taking comprehensive diagnostic measures is it possible to introduce targeted therapy and/or effective prophylaxis.

One fundamental aim of this range of testing services is to identify or rule out the existence of diarrhoea pathogens in piglets, especially coronaviruses and Clostridium difficile.

The testing package

The AGES business segment Animal Health had initially offered until the end of May - but this has now been extended until 30/12/2015 - a comprehensive testing package for three (3) samples to all piglet producers for a total price of € 70.00 net. The testing package includes the following bacteriological, virological and parasitological investigations:

Bacteriological investigation (culture)

  • Escherichia coli
  • Clostridium perfringens
  • other enteropathogenic bacteria

Molecular biological investigation (PCR) of Coronaviruses (Pool)

  • PEDV (Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus)
  • TGEV (Transmissible Gastroenteritis Virus)
  • PDCoV (Porcines Deltacoronavirus)

Parasitological investigation

  • Coccidia
  • other intestinal parasites

Additional testing

Supplementary to the testing package
other investigative parameters and/or antibiotic sensitivity tests may be requested.

Net prices per sample:

  • Rotavirus (PCR from pool): € 22.50
  • Salmonella (culture from pool): € 20.00
  • Clostridium difficile (culture): € 13,90
  • Clostridium perfringens toxin typing (PCR): € 25.40
  • Antibiogram / Isolate:
    o Agar diffusion method (14 active substances): € 7.50
    o MIC determination € 22.50

Samples

Samples

  1. 3 samples from 3 different suckling pigs with diarrhoea are to be sent in per farm/operation
  2. Pool samples and faecal swabs are not suitable
  3. The piglets may not be pre-treated
  4. The piglets should be no older than 28 days
  5. A separate, labelled sample container is to be used for each sample
  6. Sample quantity: 3-5ml per animal

Submission

Submission

  • By post, Medlog or parcel service
  • Personal submission during normal opening hours

Testing takes 4 working days.
In the case of requests for Clostridium difficile and/or Clostridium perfringens toxin typing, a longer processing time is necessary.
