National Reference Laboratory for Milk and Dairy Products

The AGES Institute for Food Safety Vienna and its predecessor organisations have been responsible for conducting the tasks of a National Reference Laboratory (NRL) for Milk and Dairy Products since 1993. At present, this is done in cooperation with the groups for animal-based foods and microbiology, as well as the Department for Food Additives and Ingredients.

The NRL’s key tasks are to carry out chemical and microbiological tests for milk and dairy products in line with examination standards harmonised by the EU and assist in the development of these international standards (DIN ISO).

Another important task of the NRL is maintaining national and international contacts, e.g. as part of the European-wide NRL network.
