Food contact materials (FCMs) are all materials and items -- including active and intelligent food contact materials and articles -- that are intended or foreseen to come into contact with food as finished products and that are regulated by Regulation (EC) No. 1935/2004.

The Department for Commodities and Cosmetics (GEKO) at the Institute for Food Safety Vienna (LSV) has been the National Reference Laboratory for food contact materials since 2004.

The essential tasks of the NRL regarding FCMs are participating in the development of technical guidelines for matching quality standards and harmonising tests for food contact materials, as well as working out reference analysis methods at European levels. Another important task of the NRL is information transfer and maintaining national and international contacts in the field of food contact materials.
