Within the AGES-Training „Detection of Radioactivity” the basics of measuring radioactive samples with gammaspectroscopy on an HPGe-detector are demonstrated. Thereby operating the software and handling of the detection system are put forward. Following that main subject sample preparation and standardized procedures for the whole measurement process are discussed.

Lab training target group:

Technicians in measurement technology, analysts and heads of laboratories from the field of radioactivity analysis (During the training software from Canberra is used). Knowledge in radiation physics is beneficial.

Beside the basics of the analysis software the training deals especially with the energy calibration and the consideration of the whole measurement set-up and the resulting detector efficiency.

These aspects are necessary for a meaningful analysis using gammaspectroscopy. In this regard additional software is introduced to generate specific nuclide-libraries and geometry-files, which is required for taking into account the efficiency of the individual measurement set-up.

The main focus lies on the practical application of the software and taking the measurements. The trainees take measurements by their selves, adjust the required parameters and validate the chosen settings using certified calibration sources. The learning by practice by the first instructed and later autonomously operated measurement procedures are put forward. Sufficient time quota is granted to the practical training for responding to the individual needs of the participants as well as for giving the possibility to impress the software operation and the measurement procedure.

Sample preparation and further influence factors:

After getting impressions of the different influencing factors on the measurement system, the participants can discuss these issues. The preparation of the samples and the choice of the sample containers are among these factors and therefore represent an essential aspect. As examples the internally used containers are reviewed.

Standard procedures:

Building up on the main issue, the practical measurement process, standard procedures are reviewed. The internal processes are presented and discussed together with the participants. Finally they are supposed to introduce standardized measuring procedures in their own laboratory. Additionally involving issues regarding the quality measurement are presented.


The participants are supposed to regard all required issues and to execute the whole measurement process by their selves after the training. Furthermore they should have the know how to introduce standardized measuring procedures in their own laboratory and to adapt them to the existing situation if necessary.
