What does the AGES Laboratory Training on the analysis of pesticide residues in plant based food and animal feed offer participants?

These five-day modules are held at the AGES National Reference Laboratory for Pesticide Residues at the Institute of Food and Feed Safety in Innsbruck and focus on the analysis of pesticides from sample taking to reporting in a comprehensive and practical way. The modules will also detail the legal principles and quality-relevant conditions at an accredited lab, in addition to theoretical knowledge and analytical know-how. Each participant will carry out the relevant procedures on real samples under professional supervision in a laboratory for routine tests.

The focus of Module I (Basic Module) is centred on the examination of simple, plant-based food and animal feeds (fruit and vegetables with medium to high water content; cereals, dried fruit, single feedstuffs…) using pesticide multi methods (LC-MS/MS, GC-MS/MS). This will be followed by other modules introducing more complex food (tea, herbs and spices, …) and animal feed analysis using multi methods and testing for selected parameters using single methods. The relevant procedures will be carried out using real samples and under professional supervision in a fully equipped laboratory. 

Lab training target group:

This lab training course will give users (analysts, heads of laboratories, …) from the field of food and animal feed analysis with knowledge in analytical chemistry and in instrumental analysis scientific and regulatory-based, as well as theoretical and practical knowledge for detecting pesticide residues.

Content Basic Module 1:

Analytical Subjects:

  • Intensive hands-on training in routine analysis in line with standard procedure EN 15662 QuEChERS – multi method using LC-MS/MS and GC-MS/MS in plant-based food 
  • Instrumental analysis to determine pesticide residues using state-of-the-art methods (liquid and gas chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry)
    (Equipment used: LC-MS/MS (QQQ), API 4000 QTRAP, SIEX; GC-MS/MS (QQQ), 7010 Series, AGILENT Technologies GmbH);
    Software: MassHunter – AGILENT; Multiquant/Analyst – SIEX;)
  • Production of reference standards – stock solutions, (mixed) working solutions, calibration solutions, stability and degradation of active substances 
  • Practice-oriented tips for routine analyses (issues and troubleshooting)
    QM Issues, Legal Matters: 
  • Quality management aspects in line with international standard EN ISO/IEC 17025 (accredited test labs)
  • Analytical quality control and validation in pesticide analysis (according to Guideline SANTE/11945/2015, as amended)
    (LOQ, Linearity, Recovery, Repeatability, Reproducibility, Matrix effects, Accuracy and Precision, Measurement uncertainty, …)
  • EURL/NRL/OFL – network, suitability and proficiency tests 
  • Relevant EU legal matters (Regulation 396/2005 – standardised maximum levels, Directive 63/2002 – sampling, …) 
  • Monitoring activities (national and EU-wide monitoring programme, incl. work documents, residue control plan for animal-based foods, animal feed monitoring)

General Subjects:

  • Lab tour and exemplary work flow in pesticide analysis at a quality-assured/accredited laboratory (sample reception and management; registering samples using a database system – LIMS; raw data and traceability, reporting, ...)
  • Tasks and responsibilities of a National Reference Laboratory (NRL) for pesticide residues within the EU
