Mosquito monitoring at Vienna-Schwechat Airport

Annual report 2021

In this project, mosquito monitoring has been carried out at Vienna International Airport since 2018 to determine whether exotic and potentially invasive mosquito species are being introduced into Austria via air traffic. Special attention is paid to the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), which has already spread massively in Europe in recent years. These mosquito species are potential vectors of a variety of pathogens and thus pose a threat to public health. This project aims to detect the occurrence of these species at the airport at an early stage, thus enabling timely countermeasures to be taken. Furthermore, the data obtained can be used to record spatial and temporal changes in the occurrence of alien mosquito species throughout Austria.
