Division for Food Safety

There are three institutes that carry out examinations and assessments in accordance with the Austrian Food Safety and Consumer Protection Act (LMSVG) and the regulations based on the LMSVG, as well as the relevant EU regulations within the Food Safety business segment. The analysis undertaken ranges from examinations for residues of animal pharmaceuticals, hormones, plant protection products, mycotoxins and other contaminants to genetically modified organisms (GMO) and ingredients, as well as additives in food and feedstuff. The Vienna laboratory focuses on foods based on animal products, cosmetics, every-day objects and beverages, while the laboratory in Innsbruck concentrates on pesticide residues in foods from plant products and the one in Linz on toys.

Conformity Assessment Body

The Division for Food Safety and its three institutes in Innsbruck, Linz and Vienna, as well as its branches in Salzburg and Graz, operate a quality management system in line with ISO/IEC 17025 and EN ISO/IEC 17020 as a conformity assessment body. It has also been accredited by the national accreditation body "Akkreditierung Austria" as a test and inspection centre (ID 371).

The accreditation is the formal recognition by the accreditation body (the Austrian Federal Ministry of Economics and Labour) that the Division for Food Safety meets all the requirements necessary to qualify as a test and inspection centre, thus, being regarded as competent to carry out all activities specified in the official accreditation decision.

The requirements are defined in the standards EN ISO/IEC 17025 "General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories", EN ISO/IEC 17020 "Conformity Assessment -- Requirements for the operation of various types of bodies performing inspection", in the Austrian Accreditation Act (AkkG) and in the regulations issued on the basis thereof. The accreditation ensures that Austrian test reports are seen as equal to those of other countries within the EU.

Quality Management Mission

The testing and inspection activities that decisions and measures are based on must be conducted under controlled conditions. The transparency, traceability and comparability of results should create trust in the activities carried out. Standardised processes, regular checks and assessments of the quality management system ensure continued improvement.

Further details on the accreditation are made publicly available by Akkreditierung Austria at the following link: Akkreditierung Austria.
