National Reference Laboratory, National Reference Activities
Amongst the main tasks of the Animal Health Division is the performance of its function as national reference laboratory for a whole range of zoonoses and epizootic diseases. Appointments as National Reference Laboratories (Animal Health) or National Reference Centres (Public Health) are through the Austrian Federal Ministry of Health and Women’s Affairs on the basis of European Union and national legislation. Reference functions are important activities in the field of animal health and the diagnosis of zoonotic pathogens and because they are in the national interest, they are treated in a similar fashion to National Reference Laboratory responsibilities.
In our capacity as National Reference Laboratory and Reference Centre (Brucellosis) we are constantly striving to fulfil our statutory duties. The AGES veterinary laboratories stand out because of high standards in the field of laboratory diagnostics. They are accredited in accordance with EN ISO 17025 and in their area of expertise constantly analyse samples, participate in national and international research projects and in conjunction with the EU Reference Laboratories are involved in developing standardised test methods.
A high degree of independence - along with this expertise - provide a guarantee for food safety, animal and human health. As epidemiologically based National Reference Laboratories we are linked into an international network of reference laboratories which in cooperation with the World Organisation for Animal Health - OIE is supporting the efforts to combat epizootic diseases worldwide. In this connection, commissioned by the Austrian Federal Government, and in conjunction with the AGES department for “Data, Statistics and Risk Assessment” we are developing contingency plans, monitoring programmes, monitoring studies, risk analyses and early warning systems.
More detailed information about the requirements with regard to sample material (material and organ requirements) for VIS-relevant diseases can be found under Service Animal Health, Information for the Official Veterinarian.
