Competence Centre for Nutrition & Prevention
Today, Austria’s food is safer than ever. Yet, a poor and unbalanced diet combined with an unhealthy lifestyle continues to be a frequent cause of a wide range of common diseases. As a result, there is an urgent need for increased preventive action, especially in the field of nutrition. The main challenge is to reduce the discrepancy between human behaviour and scientifically founded recommendations and to promote a lifestyle that is conducive to health.
This is the main focus of the AGES Competence Centre for Nutrition & Prevention.
The major aim is to improve the nutritional status of the Austrian population and to reduce nutrition-related diseases.
Key areas of activity of the Competence Centre
Interface between research and practice
The Competence Centre is a reliable partner in nutritional matters. It provides scientifically founded objective, competent and target-group-orientated nutritional information. This allows linking scientific research results to effective prevention programs for the general public.
Nutritional-scientific risk assessment
The Competence Centre collects and processes data for scientific risk assessments which builds the foundation for effective public health nutrition interventions.
Applied public health nutrition
The Competence Centre develops programs and guidelines for the implementation of international standards (WHO, EU) and establishes platforms designed to successfully develop regional programs at a national level.
Scientific monitoring and evaluation
The Competence Centre offers scientific support to increase the effectiveness of prevention programs.
The centre sees itself as an independent platform for experts from various professions, politics, media and industry. This is cruzial for a network that enables the development and application of sustainable practices in public health nutrition.
